It is a private colleg, coeducational, and focused on the liberal arts. Students have the ability to live on campus because it is a residential college. In August 1873, the proposal for a Christian college directed towards the liberal arts was presented to the Kearney Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church. Before it was presented to the Kearney Presbytery, it was approved by the community. On 13 September 1882, the first class of 44 students entered the new college located on the second floor of the old Post Office. It started with five teachers.
